Avon brings home two titles from Blue Devil Invitational

DURHAM, May 5 – It was an excellent weekend for the Avon High track and field program as the boys and girls team each won the Blue Devil Invitational at Coginchaug Regional High in Durham.

The Avon girls dominated with four individual champions and one first place relay team, winning the tournament by 73 points with a 161-88 win over Coginchaug. On the boys side, the competition was much closer with the Falcons edging Coginchaug by three points, 88-85. North Branford (77½) and Plainville (74) were third and fourth, respectively.

Avon’s depth helped the Falcons win championship trophies for the first time in the event. Avon’s 4×800 relay team (Sarah Kate Mascoli, Sara Stokesbury, Maddi McHugh, Molly Hamel) won in 10:03.09, just 0.15 of a second off the meet record.

Alannah Noonan (100 hurdles), Maeve Reiss (300 hurdles), Tara Shayler (200) and Hamel (3,200) each won their respective events. Stephanie Koo (100), Kristen Goldie (1,600), Stokesbury (800), Caroline Reindero (high jump) and Nicole Rodier (triple jump) each finished second along with Avon’s 4×100 relay team.

Emma Schweiter (100 hurdles), Sarah Hudak (400), Gracie Lennon (300 hurdles), Emily Breitsprecher (pole vault) and Monica Veldman (discus) each finished third.

Avon’s previous best finish in the Invitational was a second place finish in 2010.

The boys race was more dramatic. Avon’s 4×100 relay team (Evan Edgar, Mitch Gauthier, Noah Gilmore and Ethan Buyse) won along with the 4×4 relay team (Cory DiBacco, Colin Ponzani, Gray Stewart and Gauthier). Matt Griffin won in the 1,600 meters while Ponzani captured the 800 meters.

Lenny Dupee (shot), Chris Suttmeier (javelin) and Evan Edgar (triple jump) each finished second while Buyse (100) and Justin Alessio (3,200) grabbed third place finishes in their respective events. If any of those athletes drop a place or two, the Falcons probably finish second in the field of 10 teams.
