Avon vs. Suffield doubleheader under lights benefits cancer treatment

Avon senior Robby Brisco

AVON, Oct. 17 – Avon High’s Spirit Week soccer doubleheader under the lights on Tuesday, Oct. 23 will be a fundraiser for pediatric cancer treatment in honor of Robby Brisco and his family. The Avon boys will race rival Suffield High at 5 p.m. under portable lights around the high school football field with the Falcon girls facing Suffield at 7 p.m.

Brisco is a senior co-captain of the Falcon boys soccer team and is battling cancer. All money raised from the event will go to the Oncology and Hematology unit at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford where Brisco has been getting treatment for the past few months. Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Children 3 and under are admitted free.

Since gold is the color that signifies pediatric cancer awareness, both Avon High teams will be wearing gold jerseys against Suffield. Two gold soccer balls, one signed by the boys team and one signed by the girls team, will be given away to two lucky fans at the game.

Both Avon and Suffield games will have major implications on the hunt for the NCCC championship. On the boys side, Avon (10-1-1, 21 pts.) and Suffield (10-1, 20 pts.) are vying for the title with Ellington right there at 9-1-1. Defending NCCC champion Suffield beat the Falcons earlier this year, 1-0. Avon is at Canton on Friday while Suffield has games remaining against Bolton and Coventry.

On the girls side, Suffield (10-0-1) and Avon (10-1-1) are tied for the league lead with Granby (8-1-2) in third place. The only blemish on Suffield’s slate this year is a 1-1 tie in September. Avon hosts Canton on Friday at Fisher Meadows while Suffield has a pair of games against Bolton and Coventry before Tuesday night’s showdown.

Suffield has won two of the last three league titles but didn’t win it last year, finishing behind Granby and Avon, respectively.
