Girls from the Avon High boys swim team won the Splash Classic championship for the eighth straight season.

PLAINVILLE, Feb. 22 – For the girls that swim on high school boys swimming teams in Connecticut during the winter, the annual Splash Classic is their meet.

The Splash Classic is the unofficial state championship meet for girls that compete during the boys swimming season. Girls can qualify to swim in a CIAC state tournament event and many do. But they have to qualify under the times established for the boys.

Avon’s 15 girls rolled to an eighth straight Splash Classic championship on Saturday beating Simsbury by 113 points. The Falcons won two individual events and all three relay races. In the five other events, they had two swimmers among the top six.

Avon’s Erin Hartigan set a new meet record in the 500-yard freestyle and the two relay teams came close to setting new meet records. The 200 freestyle relay team of Kathryn Emery, Sophie Greenbaum, Hartigan and Megan Foley won the race in 1:45.43, just 0.05 of a second behind the Splash Classic record set in 2012.

Avon’s 200-yard medley relay team (Emery, Alexandra Johnson, Megan Foley, Adrienne Nguyen) won their race in 1:58.39 and was less than 0.36 of a second off the meet record set in 2005.

“We swam great,” Avon coach Diana Cesaro said. “We continually stepped up and swam fast. All of the girls swam great. I’m so proud of them. We rose to the occasion.”

Avon took the lead from the start winning the 200 medley relay. In the 200-yard freestyle, Shepaug’s Clara Wolfe beat Avon freshman Annie Hayes by 0.21 of a second in 2:04.37 to win. Kylie Panczner took third.

In the 200 individual medley, Hartigan finished second behind Northwestern’s Kiley Stotler. Hartigan was just 0.42 behind Stotler’s winning time o 2:12.92. Megan Foley was sixth in the 200 IM.

In the 50 free, Avon was led by Emery (26.36) and Nguyen (26.95) in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Northwest Catholic’s Hannah Nelson won the 100 butterfly but Foley (1:05.29) and Tiana Glover (1:06.86) were second and third, respectively.

Avon took second and third in the 100 freestyle with Nguyen (59.29) finishing second and Greenbaum (59.34) taking third.

In the 500 freestyle, Hartigan broke the 19-year record of 5:20.61 set by Shepaug’s Mindy Morse in 1995. Hartigan swam the race in 5:20.43, also setting a new girls school record in the process. Hayes and Panczner finished fourth and fifth, respectively for Avon.

In the 100 backstroke, Avon dominated with three of the top four finishers. Emery won the race by a whopping six seconds in 1:02.21 followed by Glover in third and Ryley Higgins taking fourth. Stephanie Rosenthal finished fourth in the 100 breast stroke to lead Avon.

Simsbury pushed Avon in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing less than a second behind (0.54). Avon rolled to a two-second win over Simsbury in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

Amanda Arroyo, Tia Glover, Alex Johnson and Mimi Murphy (diver) also competed for Avon along with Claire Donnelly and Lexi Pastizzo.

The Avon boys swimming team resumes its season on Monday with a tri-meet with Conard and Farmington at Cornerstone Pool in West Hartford. The final dual meet of the season is Friday in Wethersfield.
