No. 2 Simsbury faces upstart Guilford for girls hockey state title Sunday at Yale

ice hockey logoSIMSBURY, March 8 – The Simsbury High girls ice hockey team will play upstart Guilford on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for the state championship at Yale University’s Ingalls Rink.

No. 2 Simsbury (21-2) and Guilford are each making their first appearances in a state title game. Simsbury is undefeated thus far in the postseason. The Trojans won their third straight Southern Connecticut Conference title with a 3-2 overtime win over East Catholic and have won two straight in the state tournament. 

Jordan Arnold had two goals and goalie MacKenzie Dublios had 19 saves to lead Simsbury to a 5-1 win over Hall/Conard in the semifinals at Wesleyan University on Thursday night. Arnold had two goals while teammate Sutton Wunderele added three in a 9-0 rout of Trumbull/St. Joseph in the quarterfinals.

Guilford, which lost to East Catholic in the SCC semifinals, beat New Canaan, 3-2 in the quarterfinals and stunned top-seeded Darien (20-3) in the state semifinals, 2-1 in OT on Friday night.

Darien outshot Guilford, 51-9 but Guilford goalie Edy Mortiz was spectacular with 50 saves. Moritz made 15 saves in overtime before freshman Lexi Cafiero scored off an assist from Angelica Hurteau to end the contest.
