Canton’s opponents in Class S Small tournament determined

Canton helmetCANTON, Nov. 28 – Canton High will play either Capital Prep/Achievement First or North Branford in the semifinals of the CIAC Class S Small Division football tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6. The opponent for the Warriors (10-1) depends on the results of Saturday’s game between Capital Prep (9-1) and Prince Tech (8-2) at 1 p.m. at Dillon Stadium in Hartford.

If Capital Prep wins, the Trailblazers will face Canton. If Prince Tech wins, Prince will qualify for a spot in the Class S Large Division and the Warriors will face North Branford (10-1) in the semifinals on Dec. 6. The championship game is Saturday, Dec. 13.

Northwest Catholic is the top seed in the Class S Small Division, which also will include Canton, Capital Prep and North Branford.

The Class S Large Division includes Valley Regional/Old Lyme (11-0), Ansonia (10-1) and Windham (9-1). Plainfield, Prince Tech and Bullard Havens are vying for the final spot in the Large Division. Plainfield (9-1) plays Griswold (5-4) on Saturday and can clinch a berth with a win and a Capital Prep victory over Prince Tech.

The top eight teams in each class qualify for the state tournament in football. Then, they are separated into two four team divisions based on student enrollment.

This is Canton’s first-ever berth in a CIAC football state tournament.
