GRANBY, May 26 – The recent string of championships by the Avon High girls track and field team has been fueled by their expertise on the track. It was no different as the Falcons clinched their third straight North Central Connecticut Conference championship Tuesday with a dominating 49-point victory over Granby in their final appearance at the NCCC championship meet.

With six individual champions and two relay victories, Avon scored a school record 154 points at the NCCC championship meet with Granby coming in second for the second time in three years with 105 points. Canton, with about 10 athletes, was fifth.

Led by senior Molly Hamel, the Falcons (14-0, 14-0 NCCC) won four events on the track and had 10 athletes capture medals in track events. Hamel captured the 3,200 meters for the third time in four years, won the 1,600 meters with a personal-best time of 5:16.0 and was third in the 800 meters.

Avon’s Carly Regalado won the 300 hurdles with a school and meet record time of 45.98 seconds, more than 1.40 seconds ahead of Cassandra Miller of Granby in second place. She also was second in the 100 hurdles behind SMSA’s Eugenia Weaver, who set a meet record.

Regalado also ran on Avon’s 4×400 meter relay team with Jennifer Koo, Emma Schweitzer and Shipa Donde that cut nearly four seconds off the previous meet record. The team won the race in 4:08.86, erasing the mark set by Tolland in 2005. The Falcons won the event for the third straight year.

“We were running on all cylinders,” Avon coach Al Dadario said. “They were motivated. We were on a mission all year to leave everyone with a parting present. They all wanted to perform well and go out as champions.”

Koo captured the 400 meter championship beating Suffield’s Kira Bourrett by 0.20 of a second while Chamiyah Rowland won a pair of medals in the 100 (4th) and 200 meters (5th). Avon’s Tara Shayler (5th, 200), Donde (6th, 400), Rachel Martin (5th, 3,200), Madison Sides (6th, 800), Kristen Goldie (4th, 1,600) and Christina Martin (5th, 1,600) also won medals in track events.

Avon’s 4×100 relay (Schweitzer, Karina Bucci, Shayler, Rowland) also won a league championship, running the race in 51.66 seconds, almost a second ahead of Stafford (52.46). It was second time in three years for Avon winning this race. Schweitzer, Shayler and Bucci ran on Avon’s league champion 4×100 squad in 2013 with Stephanie Koo.

Avon did well in the field events, too. Senior Kaely Quijano won the pole vault for the second year in a row with a school and meet record leap of 10 feet, three inches. That broke the record of 10 feet set in 2012. Quijano also was fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

Freshman Carly Carpino won the NCCC title in the triple jump, beating Classical’s Chantei McPherson by less than two inches. Other Avon athletes winning medals in field events included Jade Yen, who was fifth in the shot, Kieley Quijano who was fifth in the pole vault, and Audrey Worth, who was sixth in the pole vault. Carly Carpino was also seventh in the long jump.

The Falcons leave the league after winning their last 44 NCCC dual meets and 45 dual meets in a row, dating back to the 2012 campaign. Avon won six NCCC titles in girls track and field since they joined the league in 1985. The Falcons will move to the Central Connecticut Conference in September.

“It was an all-around effort,” Dadario said. “Every element of the track team from relays to sprinting to distance did well.”

Canton coach Tim O’Donnell was thrilled that his small Warrior team was able to accomplish with about a dozen athletes, finishing fifth for the second straight year. Lucy Tanner took off a walking boot off an injured foot and finished third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Emily Mitchell was third in the 200 meters in 27.81, fifth in the 100 meters in 13.38 and 11th in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, two inches. Emily Briggs knocked 22 seconds off her seed time and took third in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:21.40.

Amber Harraden was fourth in the 400 meters and Abby Briggs was seventh in the 800 meters with a school record time of 2:31.31, breaking the mark set by Jocelyn Rossitto four days earlier at the Last Chance meet Saturday in Canton.

Canton was 9-5 in the dual meet season.
