Zone 1 champion Simsbury tops Unionville for 12th straight win

SIMSBURY, July 14 – The Zone 1 champion Simsbury American Legion baseball team shows no signs of slowing down. Post 84 captured their 12th straight game with a 2-1 decision over Unionville Tuesday night at Memorial Field.

Catcher Ryan Gothers’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a 1-1 tie to put Simsbury (20-3) in front for good. Simsbury loaded the bases when Jake Nichols and Jake King had back-to-back singles to centerfield. Shortstop Jack Lavigne walked to load the bases.

Unionville (6-15) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Bailey Meccariello singled to centerfield and moved to second base on a fielder’s choice. After stealing third, he scampered home with a 1-0 lead after an attempted pickoff throw got away.

In third inning, Simsbury responded quickly. With two runners on base, Jack Patrina’s sacrifice fly to centerfield drove in Jake Nichols from third base to tie the game at 1-1. Nichols had singled and moved to third on a double by King.

Simsbury shutout Winsted, 8-0 on Monday night at Memorial Field. Post 84 was led by pitcher Kevin Gurry, who went the distance on the mound, striking out four and scattering five hits. Jack Nedorostek was 2-for-3 and two RBI while Lavigne was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Winsted slips to 6-15 on the season.

Pitcher Gavin McConnell (3-0) went five innings, allowed five hits and struck out five to pick up his third win of the season. Jack Patrina pitched two innings and fanned three to earn the save.

Simsbury closes out the regular season by hosting Wolcott Wednesday night at Memorial Field at 5:30 p.m.

Terryville 7, Avon 6 (10)
PLYMOUTH, July 13 — Avon found themselves trailing by six runs after one inning. But Post 201 rallied with one run in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to force extra innings. But Terryville scored in the bottom of the tenth inning to hand Avon (12-10) its fourth straight loss on Monday night.
