Team New England, playing out of the Farmington Valley Racquet Club in Simsbury, finished 13th in the intermediate division at the 2015 Junior Team Tennis 18-and-under national tournament in Cayne, South Carolina.

Three players from Avon and two from Simsbury played on the team. Avon’s Eric Selzer, Kendall Held and Michael Thramann participated on the New England section intermediate team along with Simsbury’s Jeffrey Baker and Uma Mehta and Cromwell’s Lauren Pingree. The athletes competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in a team format.

Team New England defeated Guzman Champs from Southern California, 42-41 to finish 13th. Team New England also beat another New England squad from Suppican Tennis Club, 46-39 in the tournament.

Selzer and teammate Greta Hartman from Glastonbury each were recognized with an 18 and-under intermediate sportsmanship award.

The national championship tournaent serves as the crown jewel of USTA Junior team tennis as the nation’s top teams compete for the title. Each year, the USTA crowns a national champion in two age divisions (14U and 18U) in both the intermediate and advanced play divisions. Thirty-two teams from around the county participated.
