Legislative committee considers banning new turf fields using crumb rubber

The Connecticut legislature’s Environment Committee held a hearing Tuesday on legislation that would prohibit the installation of artificial turf fields and/or playgrounds that include shredded or ground rubber recycled from motor vehicle tires on or after October 1. Bits of recycled tires is commonly known as crumb fill.

State Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr., (D-Branford) said he would rather “err on the side of caution until more is known.” But not everyone, including the Connecticut Department of Public Health, agrees. Read more from our friends at CT News Junkie.
