PORTLAND, Jan. 30 – Canton had two wrestlers in the championship finals and finished seventh out of 17 teams at the inaugural Highlander Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Julian Adams (160) and freshman Braydon Fluckiger (195) each finished second. Senior Trey VandeBogart (138) finished tied for third while freshmen Donovan Mackin (106) and Brian Connolly (113) each took fourth place.

No. 6 Middletown easily won the tournament with five individual champions and eight finalists. The Dragons had a big lead over second place Pomperaug, 213 to 135½. Griswold finished third with 95 points.

Adams won two bouts to earn a spot in the finals, beating Middletown’s Chris Tewsbury, 10-6 in the quarterfinals and Suffield/Windsor Locks/East Granby’s A.J. Stewart in the semifinals, winning by pin in 58 seconds. In the championship match, Somers’ Jacob Berry-Parker dominated in a 17-3 decision.

At 195, Fluckiger beat two higher seeds to earn his spot in the final. Fluckiger beat No. 2 seed Jack Chandler of Darien in the quarterfinals with a pin in 3:45 and slipped past No. 3 seed Nate Chesworth of Enfield in the semifinals, 5-4. Somers’ Jackson Rheault won in the final with a pin in 24 seconds.

VandeBogart won his first match before falling to Gilbert’s Liam Smith, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation round, VandeBogart won three straight matches to earn a spot in the consolation final. But he couldn’t wrestle. CIAC rules limit wrestlers to just five matches in one day so he finished tied for third with Smith.

Macklin advanced to the semifinals where he lost to Trumbull’s Jonathan Kosak in 55 seconds. Connolly also advanced to the semifinals before he was beaten by Fermi’s Sean Messina, 15-10.

Canton (5-6, 3-3 NCCC) returns to the mat on Wednesday when they travel to East Windsor for a 6 p.m. start.
