P&Z to host public hearing on proposal to install lights around Canton High field

Canton hosted its first-ever night football game at the high school Friday night against Lewis Mills.

Portable lights surround the turf field at Canton High for its first-ever night football game against Lewis Mills in November 2013.

CANTON – The town’s Planning and Zoning Commission will host a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 2, on a proposal to install permanent lights around the turf field and track and field facility at Canton High School.

The school district has filed an application to install lights on four poles – two 80 foot poles on the west side of the field and two 90-foot poles on the east side. Games would end at 10 p.m. but there would be exceptions (overtime) that could keep the action on the field until 11:30 p.m.

The field opened in October 2013 and there have been night games contested using portable gas-powered lights.
