Avon erases 4-run deficit to beat Granby in seventh; Ellington blanks Canton

Catcher Jeremy Zarwanski’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Avon to a 6-5 win over Granby on Wednesday.

AVON, May 10 – Catcher Jeremy Zarwanski’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning helped the Avon High baseball team erase a four-run deficit and rally to beat Granby, 6-5, in a non-league contest Wednesday at Buckingham Field.

Granby (11-4) led by four runs, 5-1, after a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning. But Avon (10-4) scored three runs in the sixth and added another two in the seventh to secure the victory. Avon has won six of their last seven games and three in a row.

In the sixth inning, Granby scored three runs with three consecutive two-out singles from Ben Russell, Steven Walsh and Kyle Desjardins to take a 5-1 lead. A pair of walks off Avon reliever Kyle Emery set up the rally.

Avon responded quickly in the sixth. Desjardins quickly got two outs but the Falcons’ Kyle Zarwanski and Ryan Ollestad were able to coax out walks. Adam Theriault hit a RBI single to left field. Kyle Zarwanski moved to third base on the hit and soon scored on a wild pitch. Emery’s RBI single to center field cut the Granby lead to one run, 5-4.

Emery set down the Granby side in order in the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brendan Dyer led off with a single to center field. He was followed by Chris Jacobs with another single to center field. Jeremy Zarwanski’s two-RBI double drove in both runs to win the game, 6-5.

Emery (2-0) picked up the win in relief while Desjardins took the loss. Emery was 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Falcons while Desjardins was Granby’s top hitter, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of Granby errors. In the second inning, Granby took a 2-1 lead thanks to an Avon error, a hit batter and a two-RBI single from Parker Hansen.

Avon returns to action Thursday when they host Rockville at 4:15 p.m. at Buckingham Field. Granby (11-4, 10-3 NCCC) faces Sport Medicine Science Academy on Thursday at Colt Park in Hartford at 4 p.m.
