Canton girls top Granby by two to win second straight NCCC title, 13-11

Senior Grace Giancola, Canton’s leading scorer, battles for a loose ball against Avon’s Mollie Morrison in a game earlier this year.

CANTON, May 8 –  Grace Giancola scored six goals and goalie Courtney LeFave made six saves as the defending Class S champion Canton High girls lacrosse team beat Granby, 13-11 on Monday to clinch their second straight North Central Connecticut Conference championship.

The Warriors improve to 10-1 on the season and 7-0 in the league with one NCCC contest remaining against Suffield on May 16. The Bears slip to 7-5 on the year and 4-3 in the league.

It was the fourth straight win for the Warriors after their only defeat thus far this season – a 11-10 double overtime loss to Old Lyme on April 22.

“I am extremely proud of our team to win back-to-back NCCC conference championshipsm” Canton coach Sean Cole said. “This team continues to amaze me, and we’ve yet to play our best, most complete game. So proud of these ladies who work so hard. We have received great leadership from our two senior captains, Grace Giancola and Alexa Huff.”

Canton will get tested this week with a pair of games against Class L opposition. Canton travels to West Hartford to face Hall (6-4) on Thursday at 4 p.m. and travels to Fairfield on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest against Fairfield Warde (10-3).

The Warriors also clinched a spot in the final of the NCCC Tournament on Thursday, May 25, at a site to be determined, against the winner of a semifinal between the second place and third place team in the league.
