Canton ties game in final minute, beats St. Paul in OT to earn Class S invitation

BRISTOL, May 20 – Junior Harry Mitchell took a pass from Chris Giancola with 1:24 left in overtime and scored to lift the Canton High boys lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over St. Paul and into the CIAC Class S tournament for the second straight year.

Jake Sullivan scored all three Canton goals in the fourth quarter including two in the final 1:54 of the contest to help erase a two-goal St. Paul lead and force overtime.

Canton (6-9) won three of their final four games to earn an invitation to the Class S tournament. On Wednesday, the Warriors beat Windsor, 15-4 and last week, Canton scored a school-record 21 goals in a 21-8 win over Wamogo-Litchfield.

St. Paul (8-8) ran out to a quick 4-0 but the Warriors didn’t panic. They scored six of the next eight goals in the game to tie the game at 6-6. C.J. Giancola had two goals while Sullivan and Matt Walzak had second period scores to tie the game.

St. Paul led by three midway through the third period, 10-7. But Giancola scored to cut the lead to two before Sullivan had a pair of goals in 26 seconds to tie the game at 10-10.

Tucker Raymond had consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to give St. Paul a 13-11 lead with 7:21 remaining. Sullivan scored with 1:54 left to pull Canton within a goal before scoring with 0.19 seconds remaining to tie the game at 13-13 and send it into overtime.
