Somers outlasts Granby to win the NCCC Tournament title for fourth time

Granby’s Chris Warren is ready to fire a shot on net at goalie Chris Allen in Thursday’s NCCC championship game in Granby. The shot went off the post.

GRANBY, May 25 – The Granby High boys lacrosse scored four goals in the first six minutes of Thursday night’s NCCC Tournament final against Somers, the defending Class S champions, who had won 15 of 16 games coming in.

But Somers coach Ken McCarthy wasn’t worried. Or he wasn’t showing that he was worried. He continued to quietly coach his team. He had reason to be confident.

Somers outscored Granby by a 12-3 margin to close out the first half and take command of Thursday’s NCCC Tournament championship game. Somers (16-1) rolled past Granby, 20-11, to add a tournament title to their accomplishments this season.

It was the fifth straight finals appearance for Somers and the second straight year that the Spartans have taken home the championship trophy.

Andrew Kibby had two goals in less than a minute to open the game and to help Granby race out to a 4-0 lead with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter. Somers went on a 12-3 surge to take a four-goal lead at halftime.
