AVON, June 9 – Chris Jacobs’ two-out single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in the winning run to lead the Avon American Legion baseball team to a 4-3 Zone 1 win over Bristol Friday at Buckingham Field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sean Del Gallo led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base when Justin Olson coaxed a one-out walk from Bristol pitcher Kenneth Knox. Catcher Jeremy Zarwanski grounded out to first base as Del Gallo moved to third and Olson took second base. That set the stage for Jacobs’ game-winning hit.
Reliever Connor Harris put down the side in order in the top of the seventh to earn his first win of the summer for Avon, now 2-0 overall and in Zone 1.
Del Gallo was 2-for-2 with a double and single while Will Thramann was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Olson was 2-for-3 at the plate. Del Gallo gave Avon a 1-0 lead in the first inning by stealing home. Olson got the start on the mound for Avon, scattering eight hits and striking out three over six innings.
Bristol (1-2, 1-1 Zone 1) had a 3-1 lead before Avon tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Del Gallo doubled. He scored on Thramann’s RBI single to right field. Olson followed with a single and Zarwanski loaded the bases by walking. Thramann tied the game by scoring from third base on an error – an errant pickoff attempt by Knox.
Bristol’s Jalen Benoit also stole home in the fourth inning for Post 2. Benoit and Chad Richardson were each 2-for-3 with a RBI for Bristol while Cory Fradette was 2-for-4.
Avon returns to action on Sunday when they play a doubleheader at Southington beginning at 11 a.m. at Fontana Field.
