Seasons of growth for Avon and Canton girls golf teams

It was a season of growth for the Avon High and Canton High girls golf teams this spring.

The Falcons, led by junior Katie O’Brien, finished at the .500 level for the first time since 2014. With a young team, Canton snapped a 40-match losing streak dating back to 2014 with a pair of victories this season.

O’Brien, who was named to the CCC Central White All-Star team, was medalist five times for the Falcons (10-10, 3-7 CCC Central White) who picked up wins against New Britain, Wethersfield, Simsbury, Hall, Canton and East Hartford.

Led by O’Brien with an 88, Avon finished ninth in the CCC championship meet. Sophomore Julia Logan (104), senior Jennifer Logan (110), junior Kerry Singer (115) and junior Madalyn MacKinnon (122) rounded out the top five at the CCC meet.

The season low score as a team was a 205 against East Hartford at Blue Fox Run in Avon in late April. Coach Eric Hoffman completed his fourth season.

Canton (2-14) had gone through a pair of winless seasons but got their first win since May 2014 with a 212-254 win over St. Paul in early May at their home course of Tower Ridge in Simsbury. Junior Abby Treacy was medalist with a 49.

Treacy was co-medalist in the season finale when Canton had their lowest team score since 2010 in a 189-202 win over St. Paul at Westwoods Golf Course in Farmington. Treacy had a 45 to share medalist honors with St. Paul’s Alyssa Daly and Bella Hamelin.

Treacy was the only junior on the Warriors squad this year. The remainder of coach John Manner’s 11-girl squad was comprised of just sophomores and freshmen.

Canton and Avon did not have any players selected to participate in the state tournament.
