Avon Lions Club to host 5K road race at Fisher Meadows

The Avon High cross country program has been hosting their home dual meets at Fisher Meadows for years. In 2014, Canton’s Emily Briggs and Avon’s Rachel Martin competed at Fisher Meadows.

AVON – Since 1951, volunteers in the Avon Lions Club have been serving the greater Avon community in so many ways.

Since 2010, over 1,500 local children have been served by the Lions’ Pediatric eye screening program. The club sponsors two leadership clubs at Avon Middle School and Avon High School and the Lion’s charitable efforts support the Avon Food and Fuel Bank, Gifts of Love, Avon Social Services, the public library and other local groups.

To help raise funds for a local scholarship, the Lions will be hosting a Dollars for Scholars road race on Sunday, September 10, beginning at 10 a.m., at Fisher Meadows Recreational Area.

The 3.1 mile road race will begin at 10 a.m. and proceeds from the 5K race will benefit the Avon Lions Charities Raymond Zacchera Memorial Scholarship. The course is a run around Spring Lake and through the wooded areas along the Farmington River. It’s flat, fast course.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on race day. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 100 runners to register. You can also register online. Fee us $25 in advance and $30 on race day. The fee for runners 18 and under is $15. Dogs on leash are welcome to participate with runners.

More information about the race is available at the Avon Lions Club website.
