EAST MEADOW, N.Y., August 6 – Avon native Madison Kennedy won the 50 meter freestyle at the U.S. Open championships Sunday at the Nassau Aquatics Center.
Kennedy, 29, was the only swimmer to go under 25 seconds with a time of 24.92 seconds, just 0.02 off the meet record of 24.90 set in 2009 by Jessica Hardy.
It was Kennedy’s fastest time of the season and the 25th fastest time in the world this season in the 50 freestyle.
France’s Marie Wattel, 20, was second with a time of 25.06 while Rebecca Millard, 22, of Longhorn Aquatics finished third with 25.52. In fourth place was 14-year-old Gretchen Walsh of Nashville Aquatics.
Kennedy also had the top time in the preliminary round with a time of 25.42 seconds.
