HIGGNAUM, Sept. 20 – A year ago, the now-graduated Grace Giancola dominated the boxscore for the Canton High girls field hockey team scoring 28 goals – the highest number of goals by a player in a single season in 14 years, since 2002.
This year, the Warriors have more than one scoring threat. Laura DiMartino scored two goals and an assist last week as Canton split a pair of games – shutting out Stafford, 3-0, to earn their first NCCC victory of the season before dropping a 2-1 decision to Haddam-Killingworth. Ashley Huff scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the loss to the Cougars.
DiMartino had two goals while Abby Charron added her third goal of the season in the shutout win over the Bulldogs that left Canton undefeated after four games (3-0-1). Goalie Jessica Szczepanski got the shutout win over Stafford for the Warriors. Julianna Iovine had two assists for Canton.
Haddam-Killingworth (2-2) scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to have Canton (3-1-1, 1-0-1 NCCC) their first loss of the season.
Canton travels to Somers on Tuesday before hosting Granby on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. in a home game at the high school.
