No. 9 Avon sweeps Windsor in first round of CCC girls volleyball tournament

The Avon High girls volleyball team beat Windsor in the first round of the CCC Tournament on Monday night.

WINDSOR, Oct. 30 – After losing three of the final four matches of the regular season, the Avon High volleyball got back on the winning track by capturing their first post-season match of the season.

In the first round of the 16-team Central Connecticut Conference tournament, the No. 9 Falcons swept No. 8 Windsor, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-14) to advance to the league quarterfinals. Windsor (8-12) won the CCC North Patriot Division to earn the home game.

Avon (16-5) received a team-high 18 kills and 10 serving aces from Maddy Hart while Sofia Berrio added nine kills and eight serving aces. Emily Dempsey had 10 serving aces and three kills while Audrey Worth had 26 assists.

The Falcons will face either top-ranked RHAM (19-0) or No. 16 Berlin in the final quarterfinal bout on Thursday.

Avon dropped two hard-fought matches in the final week of the regular season. Hart had 16 kills while Worth had 37 assists in a 3-1 loss to Farmington (25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16). Dempsey added seven kills for Avon.

Earlier in the week, Avon was swept by Woodstock Academy, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) with Hart getting nine kills and Berrio getting seven kills and two blocks. Worth had 20 assists and seven digs.

Avon finished second in the CCC West Patriot Division with a 6-4 record. Farmington won the division title with a 9-1 record. Avon played two games each against CCC West Patriot Division members Farmington, Glastonbury and Simsbury along with single games against CCC West Colonial Division members Southington, Hall, Conard and Northwest Catholic.
