RHAM bounces Avon from CCC volleyball tournament; Coventry wins in NCCC

GLASTONBURY, Nov. 4 – The Avon High girls volleyball team ran into undefeated RHAM in the quarterfinals of the Central Connecticut Conference tournament and were eliminated on Thursday by a 3-0 score, 25-6. 25-11 and 25-10.

Undefeated RHAM (22-0) was just too strong for Avon with 43 kills in the three-game match while the Falcons had just 17. RHAM had 15 blocks. Senior Alana Hruska had 16 kills to lead the Sachems while teammate Allie Welch had 33 assists.

Avon (16-6) was led by Maddie Hart with nine kills and Emily Dempsey with four kills. Abby St. Onge had 12 assists at setter.

Playing four matches in four days, RHAM rolled through the CCC Tournament. After beating Avon, the Sachems swept three from Bristol Eastern in a 3-0 win in the semifinals (25-14, 25-12, 25-10) before beating Southington, 3-0 (25-8, 25-23, 25-10) on Saturday in the championship match at Glastonbury High. Hruska had 21 kills and six blocks in the championship win while Welch had 33 assists and five digs.

Avon gets back into the court Monday when they open play in the CIAC Class L tournament by hosting No 23. Fitch-Groton (10-10) at 6 p.m. If Avon wins, they will advance to the second round on Thursday. The Falcons are seeded No. 10 in Class L. RHAM is the top seed in Class L but on the other side of the bracket. The only way that Avon sees RHAM again is in the championship match.

Coventry wins NCCC Tournament
COVENTRY, Nov. 4 – In the North Central Connecticut Conference, Coventry (19-1, 15-0 NCCC) added the conference tournament trophy for the ninth time in 12 years. Granby won the tournament in 2016 and 2014 while the 2011 event was cancelled due to widespread power outages. The Patriots swept Sport Medicine Science Academy, in the tournament final for the first time, by a score of 25-14, 25-13, 25-3.
