Canton finishes 3rd at Derby Invitational; Avon’s Bourquin wins crown in Plainville

DERBY, Dec. 16 – Canton’s Matt Webb pinned Darien’s Hunter Yarish in the finals at 106 pounds of the 27th annual Derby Invitational Saturday and helped the Canton High wrestling team finish third – its highest finish in the event since 2004.

Canton (1-0, 1-0 NCCC) had five finalists with Webb bringing home a championship trophy. Morgan won the tournament for the fifth time – and for the first time since 2005 – with four individual champions and 166 points.

Gilbert, which had four individual champions and five finalists, was a distance second with 135 points. Canton was third with 123 points – the most points the Warriors have scored in the tournament since scoring 131 in 2002 when they finished third.

Webb pinned Yarish in 1:28 to win the championship. It was his third pin of the tournament.

Brian Connolly (132), Donovan Mackin (138), Austin Kilduff (170) and Braydon Fluckiger (185) each finished second. Connolly dropped a 6-5 decision in the final to Dylan McNamara of Hamden Hall – the third one-point decision for Connolly on the afternoon.

Connolly won his first bout with a 3-2 decision over Gilbert’s Nick Barber and earned a 2-1 decision over Morgan’s Trevor Follo in the semifinal.

Mackin had two pins before losing to Morgan’s Anthony Cimino by pin in 2:27 in the final at 138 pounds. Kilduff also had two pins before losing in the finals to Morgan’s Isaac Eriksen by pin in 37 seconds. At 195, Fluckiger dropped a 3-1 decision to Gilbert’s Alex Smith in the final.

Canton returns to the mat on Wednesday when they host defending NCCC champion Granby at 6 p.m. The Warriors finished second in the league a year ago at 5-1 while the Bears ran the table, going undefeated at 6-0.

Avon’s Bourquin wins title at Plainville Invitational
PLAINVILLE, Dec. 16 – Avon’s Matt Bourquin outlasted East Haven’s Josh Rao to win a championship at 195 pounds in Saturday’s Plainville Invitational wrestling tournament. Bourquin was one of five Avon High wrestlers in the finals. He went 3-0 in the tournament with two pins.

At 113 pounds, East Haven’s Victor Garcia beat Avon’s Abhi Bhabad, 10-4 to win the title. At 170 pounds, Bristol Central’s Damain Mahaffy dominated Avon’s Jack Coleman in the final with a 15-3 victory. At 285, Danbury’s Jordan Agosto pinned Avon’s Henry Schrecengost in the final in 1:58.

At 182, Avon’s Vinny Bonalumi battled hard but came up on the short end of a 4-3 loss to Danbury’s Jessie Patton.

Avon’s Chris Gens (182) finished third by pinning Plainville’s Davis Bure in 2:52. Teammate Ryan Baghdassarian finished third at 103 with a 5-1 win over Bristol Central’s Jake Aldi while Avon’s Sam Johnson took third at 160 by pinning Plainville’s Javier Hernandez in 2:20.

The Falcons (1-0) host two-time defending CCC North champion East Hartford on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the high school.
