Avon falls to Hand in Class L tournament opener

Avon’s Isabael Aguilar drives to the basket earlier this year against Canton.

MADISON, Feb. 27 – Avon’s Isabel Aguilar had a team-high 18 points but it wasn’t enough as defending Class L champion Hand girls basketball team opened up the state tournament with a 55-41 victory over No. 29 Avon in the first round of the Class L tournament Tuesday night.

Abby St. Onge scored 16 points for the Falcons, who finished with a record of 7-14. Avon didn’t win 40 percent of their games to qualify for the state tournament but they were still among the top 32 teams in Class L to secure an invitation to the tournament for the first time since 2016.

No. 4 Hand (22-5) advanced to the second round thanks to a game-high 19 points from Sara Wohlgemuth and 17 points from Gabby Edidio.
