Simsbury, Avon receive votes in final Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll

Simsbury’s Thomas Finn won the Class LL championship and finished second at the State Open.

Simsbury and Avon received votes in the final Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 wrestling poll of the season as voted on by state coaches and media.

For the third straight year and for the fifth time in the last six years, Danbury (11-3) was selected as the No. 1 team in the state. The Hatters, who were ranked No. 1 all season,  won the Class LL and State Open championships. They finished third in New England.

Bristol Eastern (15-0) and Fairfield Warde (18-1) finished tied for second place. The Lancers won the Class L title while Warde was second in Class LL behind Danbury. Eastern, Warde and Killingly each finished tied for second place at the State Open championships.

Southington (13-2) and Xavier (12-5) rounded out the top five in balloting followed by Killingly (31-2) and New Milford (9-1). Class M champion Foran-Milford moved up four spots to No. 8 in the poll. Trumbull (26-3) finished ninth while No. 10 New Canaan moved into the top 10 for the first time this season.

Class S champion Windham (13-5) was just outside of the top 10 at No. 11, five votes shy of New Canaan.

Simsbury (13-4, 5-1 CCC South) was ranked all season long and finished 15th in the final poll with 80 points. Twice, Simsbury was ranked as high as 13th in the poll.

The Trojans finished second in the CCC South behind Southington and were sixth in Class LL, led by Ty Finn, who won a state title at 106 and Saul Pera, who was fourth at 113. Finn took second at the 103 at the State Open and finished fourth at the New England championships.

Avon (16-7, 3-2 CCC North) was ranked for the final weeks of the season, climbing as high as No. 21 in the poll. They finished ranked No. 23 with eight points. The Falcons finished seventh in Class M was Henry Schrecengost took third at 285 and Chris Genes (220) finished fourth.

Connecticut Wrestling Online took over the poll of coaches and media members this year. The Norwich Bulletin conducted the poll for 34 years from 1983 through 2017. The final poll was released on February 28.
