Williams has 19 points to lead Avon to opening game win over Wolcott

AVON, March 5 – Jordan Williams had a game-high 19 points as the Avon High boys basketball won their first CIAC state tournament game since 2014 with a 62-44 victory over Wolcott High Monday night in the first round of the CIAC Division III tournament.

About 10 days ago, the Falcons were tied with Bristol Central in the first round of the Central Connecticut Conference tournament only to see the Rams go on a 17-point run to pull away with a 60-43 victory.

Against the visiting Eagles on Monday, No. 9 Avon tightened up their defense in the third quarter and really squeezed the Eagles in the fourth quarter, outscoring No. 24 Wolcott by 14 points to secure the victory.

Charlie Reiss had 17 points and a pair of three-point goals for the Falcons while Riley Welter added nine points. Avon sank seven 3-point shots while Wolcott (8-13) sank eight 3-point shots including three from leading scorer Elmin Redzepagic with 15 points.

Avon (13-9) hits the road for their second round game at No. 8 Brookfield (14-7) on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
