Avon Legion’s 15-and-under baseball earns opening day victory in state tourney

AVON, July 27 – Matt Leopold was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and scored two runs as the Avon 15-and-under American Legion baseball team won their state tournament opener with a 5-0 victory over Manchester Friday at Buckingham Field.

Avon (14-7) had eight hits including four in the second inning to take control of the game. Three Avon pitchers, led by Dylan Love, allowed just five hits by Manchester.

Post 201 advances to face Middletown today at 1 p.m. at Buckingham Field in the double-elimination event.

Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Leopold doubled, moved to third base on an off-balance throw into the infield and scored an error.

Avon added four more runs in the third inning. After Emmett Borenstein and Noah Gordon singled, Avon took a 2-0 lead on Daniel Galliher’s sacrifice fly. With two outs, Gordon scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 advantage.

Leopold singled, stole second base and moved to third on an error. He scored on a second error on the same play for a 4-0 lead. Colby Nemarich scored on a passed ball to give Avon a 5-0 lead. Borenstein was also 2-for-3 for Avon.
