BRISTOL, July 12 – Pitcher Kenny Knox allowed just four hits and struck out four Avon batters as the Bristol American Legion baseball team beat Zone 1 champion Avon at historic Muzzy Field Thursday night, 2-1. With the victory, Bristol (13-4-1, 11-4 Zone 1) snapped Avon’s 12-game Zone 1 winning streak.
Several mistakes led to the two Bristol runs. In the fifth inning, Anthony Lozier scored on a throwing error and in the sixth inning, Mac Goulet scored on a wild pitch.
Bristol played solid defense to keep Post 201 at bay. Avon’s Josh Coppen was at third base with one out in the third inning but was stranded there. Bristol second baseman Cory Fradette fielded a scalding line drive from Jeremy Zarwanski but not before he stared down Coppen, who remained at third base. The next batter popped out to Bristol shortstop Noah Plantamuro.
In the fifth inning, Miles Borenstein was at third base with one out and runners on first and third base. Nastri flew out for the second out of the inning and then Coppen was thrown out trying to steal second to end the threat.
Avon (16-3-1, 15-2 Zone 1) took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single in the first inning from Chris Jacob that scored Coppen. Borenstein also doubled in the fifth inning. Nastri went the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out two. He slips to 2-1 on the season.
Avon returns to action Monday night at 5:30 p.m. when they host Winsted in the final regular season game of the season at Buckingham Field. Avon will host their first state tournament game at Buckingham on Saturday, July 21.
