With win over Torrington, Simsbury Legion moves into second place in Zone 1

Simsbury pitcher Dylan Schaetzel got the start Friday night against the Torrington American Legion baseball team pitched four innings to pick up the win.

TORRINGTON, July 6 – Canton’s Dylan Schaetzel spent most of the spring pitching for the Avon Old Farms baseball team, primarily out of the bullpen.

On Friday night, the Simsbury American Legion baseball team needed Schaetzel to make a start. He pitched over four innings, scattered seven hits and struck out five to help Post 84 win their second straight game with a 7-5 Zone 1 victory over Torrington at Fuessenich Park.

With the victory, Simsbury (11-3, 7-3 Zone 1) moved into second place tie with Bristol (9-3, 7-3 Zone 1). Both teams trail Avon by 1½ game for first place. Avon leads Zone 1 with an 11-3 record and 10-1 in Zone 1.

Simsbury made three errors but had timely hitting to secure the victory. Tate Valerio was 2-for-3 at the plate for Post 84 while Nate Orluk was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Sam Attianese had a double while Joe Patrina, J.W. Wilson and James Mattson each had a single and RBI. Patrina did score a run in the first inning on a wild pitch.

Torrington (2-11, 2-11 Zone 1) had 12 hits and was led by Mike Paniatti, who was 3-for-4. Coleby Bunnell was 2-for-3 for the P-38s. Casey Navin and Adam Vanotti each had doubles for Torrington. The P-38s stranded 14 runners on base.

Schaetzel and Orluk, in relief, were able to get out of several jams. Torrington had the bases loaded with one out in the first inning but Schaetzel got a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam. The P-38s had the bases loaded again in the first inning but with two outs, Schaetzel was able to get Torrington’s Kyle Banche to ground out to shortstop to end the threat.

Simsbury returns to action on Sunday when they host Bristol at Memorial Field in a doubleheader. The first game will be the game that was suspended in June in the eighth inning with the scored tied. The regularly scheduled game will begin at 5:30 p.m. after the suspended game is completed.
