Avon, Canton boys soccer teams march into Saturday’s quarterfinals

The Avon High and Canton High boys soccer teams advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals in their respective CIAC tournaments with victories on Thursday.

In the Class S tournament, Connor Clement, Chris Tenczar and James Mattson scored goals as No. 13 Canton won their second Class S tournament on the turf field wat home with a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Parish Hill-Chaplin, champions of the Capital Region Athletic League. The Warriors (12-6) were up 2-1 at the half and added an extra insurance goal.

Canton advances to the Class S quarterfinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morgan (13-2-2) in Clinton.

In Milford, No. 12 Avon (11-4-3) won their second straight tournament game with a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Platt Tech-Milford. Alex Rostenberg, Ryan Bartkiewicz, Henry McGarrah and Michael Zelazny had individual goals while Bartkiewicz, Rostenberg and Cameron Little each had assists.

Avon goalie Max Frodermann made three stops in net to earn the victory. The Falcons outshot Platt Tech, 24-7.

Avon advances to Saturday’s Class L quarterfinal match against No. 4 Bassick-Bridgeport at 5 p.m. at Harding High.
