Rockville overwhelms Canton on the gridiron, 42-12

Canton’s Nathan Biega (32), shown earlier this season against Ellington, had an 83-yard kickoff return Friday night against Rockville.

CANTON, November 9 – The Rockville High football team clinched their first winning season since 2004 with a 42-12 Pequot Uncas Division victory over Canton Friday night in the rain on the turf field.

The Rams (6-3, 6-1 Pequot Uncas) ran for 295 yards in the first half as they overwhelmed the young Warriors (1-8, 0-7 Pequot Uncas), who started five freshmen and played seven other freshmen that saw significant time on the field.

“It was a tough night in the cold rain against a much bigger and deeper team,” Canton High coach Dante Boffi said. “(The experience they got tonight) will serve us well in the years to come.”

Seven different Rockville players scored touchdowns for the Rams, who are in their second season in the Pequot Conference after more than 30 years in the Central Connecticut Conference. Nick Foley ran for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Canton’s Nate Biega had an 83-yard kickoff return in the first quarter while Gavin Wood ran for his first touchdown of the season with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. Canton did force three turnovers in the rain with Biega, Charlie Parchen and Jack Szczepanski each recovering a fumble. Braydon Fluckinger had two sacks for the Warriors and forced a fumble.

Quarterback Dugan Lloyd led the Warriors on the ground with 75 yards on 15 carries. Biega ran for 47 yards on seven carries. Wood caught three passes for 22 yards from Lloyd, who was 7-of-17 for 64 yards.

Canton will complete the 2018 campaign by hosting Granby (6-3) in the annual Thanksgiving Eve contest on Wednesday, November 21 at 6:30 p.m. on the turf field.
