AVON, April 1 – Five swimmers and two wrestlers earned All-State honors competing for Avon High this winter.
Chris Gens (220 pounds) and Henry Schrecengost (285) each won Class M championships in wrestling to earn All-State honors. Swimmers Justin Arroyo, Chris Chute, Rahul Kumar and Andre Richard earned All-State honors for winning the 200-yard freestyle relay at the Class M championships.
Senior Maksymilian Jaremko also earned All-State honors for winning the 200-yard freestyle at the Class M championship meet.
The two wrestlers helped Avon, win their first Central Connecticut Conference title by grabbing the CCC North championship, go undefeated this season (22-0) and finish fourth in Class M – their best-ever finish in Class M.
Gens (40-5) had little problems winning his first state championship with three consecutive pins to get to the final. In the final, he led Berlin’s Max Schlein 4-2 after two periods. Gens got an escape and immediate takedown with 1:45 left in the match to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Schrecengost (40-3) also had three consecutive pins to earn a spot in the final. Against Ellis Tech’s Hayden Miniski in the final, Schrecengost took a quick 4-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a two-point near fall. He extended the lead to 6-0 with a two-point takedown in the third period.
At the Class M championship meet, Richard passed two swimmers in the final 50 yards to lift Avon to a stunning victory over Wethersfield and the state championship. It was the first relay team in school history to win a state title in swimming.
Avon was in third place in the 200 freestyle relay and trailed Wethersfield and Pomperaug after the first leg of the race, second leg and third leg. When Richard dove into the water for the anchor leg, he trailed Pomperaug’s final swimmer by a full second and Wetherfield’s fourth swimmer by 0.4 of a second.
Richard swam a time of 21.79 to help Avon turn in a new school-record time of 1:30.34 to win the state championship. Wethersfield (1:30.48) was second, 0.14 of a second behind the Falcons with Pomperaug (1:30.87) finishing third.
In the 200 freestyle, Jaremko led from start to finish to capture win his first state title. Avon went 5-6-1 this year in swimming and 4-1 in the CCC North, second behind league champion Wethersfield.
