Matt Rose strikes out 11 to lead Canton to a 3-0 win over SMSA

CANTON, May 3 – Pitcher Matt Rose limited Sport Medicine Science Academy (SMSA) to just two hits and struck out 11 as the Canton High baseball team won their second straight game with a 3-0 North Central Connecticut Conference win Friday at Bowdoin Field.

Rose went the distance to pick up his first win of the season on the mound. He also had a two-out RBI single in the first inning and scored a run in the sixth inning.

Canton (5-7, 5-6 NCCC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Michael Sullivan singled to center field with one out and moved to second base on a passed ball. He advanced to third base on an error and scored on Rose’s RBI single to center field.

The Warriors extended the lead in the sixth inning. Rose walked and scored on Drew Ferrone’s RBI triple to deep center field. Ferrone scored on Ryan Scarfuri’s RBI single to center field for a 3-0 lead.

Rose struck out two of three batters in the seventh inning to secure the win.

Canton returns to action on Monday for the first of four games next week. Canton travels to Stafford on Monday for a 4 p.m. contest. The Warriors host Coventry on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then travel to Coventry on Friday for another 4 p.m. contest.

Canton concludes the week with a non-league game on Saturday when they host Gilbert-Winsted from the Berkshire League at 10 a.m.
