Avon falls to Torrington in final tuneup before Sunday’s Zone 1 opener

TORRINGTON, June 7 – In their final non-league exhibition before the Zone 1 season begins, the Avon American Legion baseball team team used five pitchers to get some work on the mound in a 9-1 loss to Torrington at Fuessenich Park.

Torrington rapped out nine hits in the game while Post 201 pitchers combined to strike out five and walk five batters. Avon (0-3, 0-0 Zone 1) committed four errors.

Avon’s Max Raha was 2-for-3 while Emmett Borenstein and Jake Coppen each had singles. Coppen drove in Avon’s lone run in the first inning. With a Raha on third base, Coppen grounded the ball to shortstop but Raha beat the throw home to score the run.

Torrington was a former member of Zone 1 but now they are in Zone 5 as part of the realignment of zones across the state. A year ago, there were eight zones but now it is down to six.

Avon opens their Zone 1 campaign on Sunday when they host Newington at 11 a.m. at Buckingham Field.
