Caputo wins second dual meet for Canton; Avon tangles with Southington

SIMSBURY, September 18 – Canton’s Julia Caputo won her second dual meet of the season with a 35 second victory over Suffield’s Emily Brydges in a four-team girls cross country meet at Stratton Brook Park in Simsbury on Wednesday.

Caputo won the 3.1 mile race in 21:09 with Brydges taking second place with a time of 21:44. Canton beat Granby, 21-34 and Rockville, 18-38 but fell to undefeated Suffield, 25-33. Caputo, Maeve Balavender (fourth place) and Grace First (6) earned top 10 finishes for Canton.

The Warriors (3-2, 3-2 NCCC) split their season-opening dual meet last week with a 23-34 win over Ellington and a 15-50 shutout win over Windsor Locks. Caputo won that meet as well.

On Wednesday, Granby (2-4, 2-4 NCCC) picked up a 21-36 victory over Rockville. Freshman Isabel Gravlin finished seventh while Katherine Benoit was tenth.

In the boys race, unbeaten Suffield, the three-time defending NCCC champion, put five runners in the top 10 to sweep Canton, Rockville and Granby. Nathan Davidson picked up the win for Suffield with a winning time of 17:41 for 3.1 miles. Davidson beat Rockville’s Sam Hollworth by 13 seconds for his first dual meet win of the season.

Charles Attianese led Granby (4-2, 4-2 NCCC) with a fifth place finish in 19:22, followed closely by teammate David Hitchinger in sixth place and Nicholas Boyd, who finished ninth. Stratton Brook Park is the home course for Canton.

Canton (2-3, 2-3 NCCC) was led by Matthew Barton, who finished tenth in 19:56. The Warriors opened their season a week ago with a 17-38 loss to Ellington and a 20-43 victory over Windsor Locks.

Avon tangles with Conard, Southington
SOUTHINGTON, Sept. 17 – Sophomore Jack Martin helped keep the pressure on Conard’s Gavin Sherry, who set a new course record at a three-team boys cross country dual meet at Camp Sloper in Southington on Tuesday.

Sherry won the race with a course record time of 16:33.4 over the 3.1 mile course. He helped Conard, which had five runners in the top 10, beat Avon, 20-37.

Martin finished second with a time of 16:50 while Tyler Hinrichs finished ninth in 18:12.1 to earn another top 10 performance for the Falcons (1-3, 1-3 CCC West Patriot).

The Avon girls cross country (2-2, 2-2 CCC West Patriot) team split with a 23-32 win over Conard and a 23-34 loss to Southington. The Blue Knights were led by Jackie Izzo, who won the race in 20:26 with another course record time. Gabrielle Richmond (22:44) led the Falcons with a third place finish, followed by top 10 finishes from Mareen Ek (4, 23:13) and Sarah Lancaster (7, 24:21).
