With his arm and legs, Collin boosts Plainville past Avon, 34-7

Avon QB Tabor Engle completed a career-high 11 passes in Saturday’s 34-7 loss to Plainville.

AVON, November 9 – Plainville High quarterback Christian Collin ran for a game-high 171 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the visiting Blue Devils to a 34-7 win over Avon in CCC Division III action Saturday on the turf field.

The new $2.99 million complex, which includes a state-of-the-art eight-lane track and field facility along with a new synthetic turf field, was formally dedicated before the game. Construction on the facility began in April. Enough work was completed by September to safely begin hosting athletic events.

Voters in town approved a proposal to build the new facility at Avon High last December in a special referendum, 1,220 to 783.

The victory kept Plainville’s hopes alive for a CIAC Class S tournament berth. The Blue Devils (6-2), who won for the third time in the last four games, are ranked ninth in the latest CIAC rankings. The top eight teams earn a berth into the playoffs.

Collin helped set the table for Plainville. A 21-yard run from Collin helped set up Beau Lasher’s one-yard run for a 7-0 lead. On their next drive, Collin ran 68 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. Plainville led 13-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Collin’s 41-yard pass to Javan Paradis extended the lead to 20-0 with 6:44 left in the third quarter. Tanner Callahan’s 11-yard run with 32 seconds left in the third quarter gave Plainville a 27-0 lead.

Collin completed 14-of-22 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns for Plainville, who have won three straight over the Falcons. Dylan Hall (5 receptions, 108 yards) caught a 76-yard TD pass from Collin in the final minutes of the contest.

The Blue Devils got the job done defensively, too. Avon was limited to just 31 yards rushing on 25 carries. Francesco Longo led the way with 16 yards on nine carries. Avon quarterback Tabor Engle did complete a career-high 11-of-19 passes for 90 yards for the Falcons (1-7).

Sean Nolan caught two passes for 33 yards while Quantral Stewart pulled in three receptions for 21 yards. Nolan gave Avon their only touchdown of the afternoon when he scored on a two-yard run with 5:18 left in the game. Kevin Mullaj had the extra point kick.

Avon returns to action on Friday night when they travel to Rocky Hill to take on the Terriers (2-6) at John McViar Field at 7 p.m.
