Boys, girls tennis teams looking for success

It’s been a long two years for the Canton High girls tennis team with young, inexperienced players on the court. After earning a spot in the CIAC Class S tournament in 16 out of 17 years from 1992 to 2008, Canton hasn’t qualified for the postseason the past two years, going 6-12 and 5-13, respectively.

But coach Jerry Havel feels that this could be the spring that Canton returns to the CIAC tournament with a more experienced team. “I know we’ll have a competitive team,” he said. “Not one player has dropped out in the last two years. They’ve hung in there and I’m proud of them.”

Junior Carrie Hefler looks to begin the season at No. 1 singles with senior co-captain Nancy Kutz at No. 2 singles and senior co-captain Cassie Grecula and junior Joanne Miller filling out the last two singles positions. Seniors Katharine Eich and Stephanie Kupchik should be at No. 1 doubles with junior Kailynn Malloy, senior Kelsey Poe and sophomores Samantha Jorge and Allison Morini looking to earn some playing time in doubles.

BOYS TENNIS: A year ago, the Warriors finished 6-8 but with a more experienced team in 2011, Canton is looking to earn a spot in the Class S tournament.

Senior Nate Scott, the All-State linebacker for the football team, will begin the season at No. 1 singles with sophomore Peter Jutras at No. 2. Sophomores Ben Corbett, Alex Boon von Ostage and freshman Eric Scott are vying for the remaining two slots in singles. In doubles, three seniors and two juniors are looking to earn a spot on the court.
