Southington prevails in muddy battle with Simsbury

season? Playing a steady rain and a foot-grabbing mud, the Trojans fought valiantly but fell to Southington, 14-8 on Wednesday night at muddy Fontana Field.

Southington took a 6-0 lead on a 13-yard run from Matt O’Connor in the first quarter. Simsbury’s Christian Martinez (21-126) scooped up a third down fumble in the second quarter and rambled 24 yards for a touchdown. Andrew Girard’s two-point conversion gave the Trojans a 8-6 advantage.

Southington (6-3) took a 14-8 lead when Corbin Garry (9-77) ran 68 yards for a touchdown. Andrew Walowski scored on a two-point conversion pass from Stephen Barmore.

“My feet were sucking down to the ground every step I took,” Garry told the Meriden Record Journal. “I just had to power through (with) choppy steps and get to the end zone.”

Simsbury had one last chance, driving to the Trojan 37 with 8:57 left in the game but the drive stalled when Knight LB Andrew Waloski made a tackle for a three-yard loss on fourth down.
