MDC wants to divert water from Farmington Valley to sell to UConn

Farmington River in Burlington.

New Hartford Plus.com
The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), which supplies drinking water from the Farmington Valley watershed to communities throughout greater Hartford, wants to expand their service area and begin supplying water to the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

The demand for water at UConn has been a concern for several years. One year, the school used so much water that a local river in eastern Connecticut ran dry.

A story at the New Hartford Plus.com discusses some of the reasons for the MDC expansion (to grow its customer base, increased revenues) and how the Farmington Valley Watershed Association has been forced to remain quiet on this proposal due to a 1998 settlement agreement with the MDC over an earlier MDC attempt to divert water from the Farmington River.
