Simsbury aiming for District 6 banner

In Major Division baseball (ages 11-12), Simsbury is two wins away from winning its first District 6 championship since 2010. 

Simsbury (5-0) faces Burlington (5-0) on Friday night in the semifinals of the double elimination portion of the D6 tournament in Harwinton. The winner advances to Sunday’s D6 title game at 5 p.m. in Terryville while the loser will face Torrington Nationals (4-2) at 3 p.m. in Harwinton in the consolation final. 

A second game, if necessary, will be held on Monday night in Terryville at 6 p.m. The District 6 champion advances to the Division II tournament – a four-team double elimination event in Thomaston at Reeves Field beginning July 16 and running through July 21. 

Avon (2-2), Canton (2-2) and Granby (2-2) did not finish among the top four teams in pool play to advance in the District 6 tournament. Avon had played in the last 10 District 6 finals, winning six times. 

East Granby (3-1) finished third and qualified for the double elimination portion of the tournament. But they lost to Burlington, 10-4 on Wednesday and were eliminated by Torrington, 11-1 on Thursday night. Simsbury whipped Torrington Nationals, 10-1 on Wednesday night. 

In the District 6 Major Division softball tournament (ages 11-12), Torrington (6-3) went undefeated in the double elimination portion of the D6 tournament to win its second title in three years. Torrington beat Burlington, 13-5, slipped past Granby, 5-4 and won the title with a 3-1 win over Granby. 

Torrington, Granby and Burlington were each 3-1 in the pool portion of the tournament. Simsbury was 2-2. Avon and Canton didn’t enter teams this spring. 

In the Division II regional tournament, Torrington went 1-2, beating Wallingford, 6-3 but losing twice to Seymour, 12-0 and 11-1. Seymour won the Section I championship with an 11-1 win over North Branford to earn a berth in the best-of-3 state championship series against Mystic/Groton this weekend in Orange. 

Seymour is the defending state champion while this is the third visit to the finals by Mystic in the last four seasons.
