
Riley Hoffman and the Canton High boys soccer team have won six straight games — its longest win streak since 2002.
CANTON – Senior Nate Hanson had two goals Monday as the Canton High boys soccer team won their sixth straight game with a 4-2 win over East Granby on the road. With the victory, the Warriors (7-2, 5-2 NCCC) clinched a berth in the CIAC Class S tournament for the ninth straight year.
It’s Canton’s longest winning streak in 12 years since taking six straight to open the 2002 season.
Against East Granby, Riley Hollis and Jacob Dupre scored goals for Canton. Goalie Josh Frigo made three saves in net to earn the win.
Falcons unbeaten in the NCCC
AVON – Avon (7-0-1, 7-0 NCCC) hosts Windsor Locks tonight under the lights at the high school before playing a crucial contest against three-time Class M champion Suffield (7-0) on Friday at Fisher Meadows at 3:45 p.m. Avon topped Ellington, 1-0 on a goal by Matthew Fuge on Tuesday, Tonight’s game with Windsor Locks begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Falcons have given up just one goal so far in seven games this season, led by goalie Danny Magrini, who has six shutouts. Riley Strassner is Avon’s top scorer with 14 goals. Fuge has added 10 goals with Max Gorack popping in four.
Avon is ranked No. 12 in the latest state coaches poll. Suffield is ranked No. 4 and has won 42 straight game. Granby reportedly owns the state record with 43 consecutive wins.
GIRLS SOCCER
Avon ties Ellington
AVON, Oct. 6 – Ellington goalie Gina Carroll made seven saves in net as Avon battled Ellington to a 0-0 overtime tie under the lights at Avon High on Monday night. Emma Carlone and Lydia Cuddleback made two saves for Avon (7-0-1), which hasn’t allowed a goal this season.
Michaela Marcus and Hannah Davey leads the way for Avon with seven goals each. Kaleigh Sherman has five goals on the season.
Avon has a big match with Suffield (7-0-1) on Friday at Fisher Meadows at 3:45 p.m. The only blemish on Suffield’s record this year is also a 0-0 tie with Ellington (5-1-3).
Canton 5, East Granby 1
CANTON, Oct. 6 – Canton earned its initial NCCC victory of the season under first-year head coach Seth Korn with a 5-1 win over East Granby. Chloe Gucciardi, Sophia Langou, Katie Walker, Emma Skinner and Cami McCauley each had goals for Canton, now 2-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the NCCC. Goalie Amanda Gottlieb made 11 saves in net to pick up the victory.
