AVON, Feb. 17 – Four Avon High students signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college. Before an audience of family, friends, coaches and school officials, Hannah Davey, Amanda Holtzman, Michaela Marcus and Emily Stross signed letters of intent on Tuesday.
Davey will play lacrosse for Lafayette College, a Division I program in Pennsylvania. Holtzman will play soccer at Siena College while Marcus will play soccer at the University of Maine. Stross will play field hockey at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Davey has played soccer and lacrosse at Avon. She has played three years on Avon’s varsity lacrosse squad and the Falcons have won three NCCC championships and have advanced to the Class M semifinals the past two seasons. As a forward, Davey scored 94 goals last spring for the Falcons (17-3).
Holtzman was a defender for the Falcons, who earned a share of the NCCC championship this fall and played in the Class L final for the second time in three years. She’ll be playing Division I soccer with Siena.
Marcus played forward and midfield for the soccer team, earning All-State honors this fall. She scored 13 goals this season including both goals in a 2-0 win over Mercy in the Class L semifinals. She has scored four goals in six CIAC tournament games the last two seasons. Marcus is also a guard on the Avon High girls basketball team that just earned a piece of the NCCC championship earlier this week. She’ll be playing Division I soccer with the Black Bears.
Stross was an defensive anchor with the Avon High field hockey team this fall as the Falcons won the NCCC championship for the fourth year in a row and advanced to the Class M semifinals for the third consecutive year. The Falcons pitched 11 shutouts in 18 games. Stross scored six goals this season and has 16 goals in the past three seasons.
“These young women have been leaders on and off the field at Avon High School,” said Greg Ferry, athletic director at Avon High. “We are proud of their accomplishments here and congratulate them on being recruited to play at the collegiate level.”
The Avon High School Booster Club will host a separate ceremony on June 4 to recognize all AHS athletes (recruited or not) who are moving on to play a varsity collegiate sport after graduation.
