Avon’s Justin Olson struck out 11 and pitched seven shutout innings to lead the Falcons to a 1-0 win over Suffield Saturday.
AVON, May 23 – In a pitcher’s duel, the Avon High baseball team won its final regular season game in the NCCC with a tightly-played 1-0 win over Suffield Saturday afternoon at Buckingham Field.
The win ensures that the Falcons are one of four teams to earn a spot in next week’s NCCC Tournament on Friday at Veteran’s Field in Windsor Locks. Avon (13-6, 11-5 NCCC) will play in the tournament along with Stafford, Somers and Coventry.
Pitcher Justin Olson went the distance for the Falcons striking out 11 and limiting Suffield to just two hits. With Avon holding a one run lead, Suffield (10-8, 9-7 NCCC) had runners at first and third base with one out in the fifth inning.
Suffield’s Matt Clark doubled and he moved to third when Aaron Marquis reached on an error. But Olson struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Avon scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Steve Carrier doubled and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Jeremy Zarwanski. Carrier scored on a RBI single to left field from Matt Boone. Boone had two of Avon’s five hits in the game.
Suffield hurler Tim Eheader pitched well in six innings. He struck out nine and gave up five hits.
Avon concludes the regular season with a game at Wethersfield on Wednesday with a 3:45 p.m. start.
