GRANBY, January 8 – A 12-0 surge in the final 3:54 of the third quarter by the Canton High girls basketball team enabled the defending Class S champion Warriors to pull away from Granby, 45-37, Monday night and hand the Bears their first loss of the season in a North Central Connecticut Conference contest.
Sophomore Abby Charron led the Warriors (5-1, 4-1 NCCC) with a game-high 17 points while Belle Magna scored nine points and Grace Treacy added five.
Elsie Phillips scored 12 to lead Granby (5-1, 3-1 NCCC) while Jalyn Brown chipped in with 11 points. The Bears led by one, 18-17, with 3:54 left in the third quarter before Canton went on its run.
Canton begins a home-and-away series with Coventry (1-5, 0-4 NCCC) on Tuesday night. The Warriors travel to Coventry for a 7 p.m. at the Matthew Hurlock Gymnasium on Tuesday. On Thursday night, Canton hosts Coventry at 7 p.m. at the high school. Granby hosts Somers on Wednesday for their next contest.
