Staples remains No. 1 in state coaches poll; No. 5 Granby wins NCCC title
Staples-Westport (13-0) remains the No. 1 ranked team in the state in the latest state coaches top 10 field hockey poll. The Wreckers beat then-No. 2 Wilton, 4-1 on Friday to win their 19th straight game.
Staples added their 20th consecutive win on Monday with a 9-0 shutout of Trumbull. The Wreckers have allowed just four goals this season.
Undefeated Cheshire (12-0), which has given up just one goal on the season, moved up to No. 2 with Darien (11-2-1) making a leap from No. 6 to the No. 3 spot in the poll.
Granby (10-1) dropped their first game of the season on Friday with a 2-0 loss to Longmeadow, Mass., who improves to 12-1. It was the first goals of the season allowed by the Bears, who remained at No. 5 in the poll.
The Bears did win their fifth straight North Central Connecticut Conference title on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Canton. Maddy Russell, Julia Olchowski and McKenzie Pederson scored for the Bears, who have won 25 straight NCCC contests since October 2015.
Wilton (10-2) dropped to No. 6 with their loss to No. 1 Staples while Pomperaug (10-1-2) joined the top 10 this week at No. 9.
