Salamida pitches shutout as Albany blanks Braintree at Northeast World Series

Pitcher Chris Salamida pitched seven shutout innings, struck out eight and allowed just five hits as the Albany, N.Y. Athletics beat defending champion Braintree (Mass.) White Sox Friday in the AABC Northeast World Series tournament at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.

In game two, the Terryville Black Sox of the Connecticut Twilight League beat the Milford Hunters, 4-3 in 12 innings with a walk-off double from Eric Schlittler.  The tournament resumes today with two games at Municipal Stadium and Fuessenich Park in Torrington beginning at 10 a.m.

Salamida was in control for most of the game, beating the White Sox for the third time since 2017. He did have to work out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of strikeouts. Outside of the second inning, Salamida allowed only allowed one runner to reach second base.

Albany (34-4-2) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Mark Powell led off with a single, Jaden Ross beat out a sacrifice bunt for a hit and Tim Carroll blooped a single to load the bases. Nick Hansen followed with a ground ball to third but the ball was thrown wide of home allowing a run to score. Two batters later, Mike Talavera hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

For Braintree (29-4), Jake Walker went the distance on the mound, striking out three batters and walking three. The Cranberry League pitcher of the year didn’t give up an earned run. Jared Sharkey was 3-for-3 for Braintree, the three-time defending tournament champion.

Albany faces Terryville on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Fuessenich Park before completing the round robin portion of the tournament with a game against Milford at 2 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.

Milford (23-5) faces Braintree at 10 a.m. at Municipal Stadium with Terryville facing Braintree at 2 p.m. at Fuessenich Park.
