Six runners qualify for State Open cross country championships

Six area runners earned spots in the upcoming State Open cross country championship meet Saturday at the CIAC cross country championship day at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Avon’s William Lancaster and Simsbury’s Daniel Coyne and Luke Davis earned spots in the boys State Open race with Lewis Mills freshman Lindsey Cascio, Avon’s Laura Funderburk and Farmington’s Anna Weygang securing berths in the girls State Open race.

The top 12 runners in each of the six individual meets earned spots at the State Open along with the next 30 fastest times.

Lancaster finished tenth in the Class MM meet with a time of 16:58 over the 3.1 mile course to lead Avon to a sixth place finish. Thomas Armistead finished in the top 20 with a 17th place finish in 17:38.

Funderburk finished fifth in the Class MM race with a time of 20:59 as the Falcons finished fifth, one point shy of Woodstock Academy in fourth place, 179-180. Ying Ying Cheng finished 20th with a time of 22:00.

Davis (4) and Coyne (12) each finished among the top 12 in the Class L championship race with Weygang taking 14th in Class L with a fast time of 20:28 to qualify. Cascio won the Class SS race with a winning time of 20:26 beating Haddam-Killingworth freshman Grace Mitchell in a sprint to the finish.

The Canton High boys cross country team finished tenth in Class SS led by Ethan Lindquist (19:33) and Garrett Dolin (19:36), who finished 42nd and 43rd, respectively.

There was just one girl competing in cross country for the Warriors this fall and junior Morgan Babbitt earned a top 20 finish. She finished 15th in Class SS with a time of 22:35.
