Girls from Avon, Lewis Mills to face each other Sunday in powder puff football

Girls from Avon High and Lewis Mills will participate in a powder puff football game on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Avon High at 2 p.m. to kick off Thankgiving-related events between the two Central Connecticut Conference schools.

The Avon High Booster Club is organizing the event along with their counterparts from Lewis Mills.

Avon and Lewis Mills students will also continue the Souper Bowl tradition started several years ago when Avon and Simsbury faced each other in the final game of the regular season. The Souper Bowl is a competition regarding donations to local charities.

Students from both schools will collect non-perishable food items, as well as financial donations. Donations from the Lewis Mills community will be helping the Burlington Food Pantry while the Avon community will be supporting Gifts of Love. Donations will be accepted at Sunday’s powder-puff game.

The winner of the Souper Bowl will be announced at halftime of Tuesday night’s football game with final donations being presented to representatives from both charities. Avon’s varsity football team (4-5) will host Lewis Mills (1-8) on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in the final game of the season for both schools.

Powder puff football is traditionally a touch football or flag football contest featuring girls. The powder puff game will be officiated by members of each team’s program with music and food set to be available for the game. There is no admission fee for Sunday’s game.
