AVON, April 15, 2023 – Avon High’s fourth-year head coach Adam Cost has high hopes for his Falcon boys lacrosse team this year. With eight seniors, he feels this team can be competitive in the tough CCC Central division and in the Class M tournament.
“We can compete,” he said. “We will put our best foot forward. That’s all we can do. Hopefully, the chips fall on our side. All we can do is work hard.”
Some of that hard work got underway on Saturday when Avon (2-1, 0-0 CCC Central) won their second game of the season with a 10-6 non-conference win over Somers on the turf field. It was the first game for the Falcons in 10 days and their first home game of the season.
Derek Thompson tied a season-high with four goals for Avon with Jack Docchio and Gabe Gardiner each scoring twice.
“We’re coming together,” Cost said. “This is a very talented group. We need more reps and more minutes (on the field) to get the guys working together.”
Despite four goals from Jack Magel, Avon dropped their first game of the season to St. Joseph, 16-8 but the Falcons rebounded with a 13-3 win over Newington on the road with Docchio scoring four goals and Thompson getting three scores.

“We’re trying to change the culture,” Cost said “Just keep working hard to be the best we can be. We want to an elite program in lacrosse. It takes time to get there.”
The Falcons have a challenging schedule with the best lacrosse programs in the CCC in the CCC Central Division including Simsbury, Glastonbury, Hall, Conard, East Catholic and Southington. A year ago, four of the seven teams had a winning record and the remaining three finished at .500. All seven teams earned a CIAC tournament berth.
Avon returns to the field on Monday when they host Simsbury at 6 p.m.
