Avon High athletes earn All-State honors

Six girls were named All-State at Avon for their performance on the field this fall. Emma Loparco (girls soccer) and Leah Culyer and Kathryn Martin (field hockey) earned All-State honors along with three girls from the Avon girls cross country team — Abby Van Hoof, Ying Ying Cheng, Laura Funderburk.

The girls cross country team finished second at the Class MM championships and 12th at the State Open. It was Avon’s first appearance at the State Open since 2018 and their first top two finish at a CIAC championship meet since 2017.

Of note: This was the first year of Redman as head coach. He had previously served as defensive coordinator. Previous head coach Brendan Smith remained on the staff as offensive coordinator.

Of note: This was Schreinman’s first-year behind the bench after replacing Hall of Fame coach Jim Murray.

CIAC state tournament: Lost to Farmington, 3-0 in second round of the Class L tournament
Of note: Avon beat Wethersfield in the first round of the CCC Tournament and Bristol Eastern in the first round of the Class L tournament. Farmington won their second straight Class L title.
